Ateneo Logo The Ateneo de Manila University is a private Jesuit university in the Philippines which is operated and directed by the Society of Jesus. It began in 1859 when the local governmental agencies of Manila transferred jurisdiction of the Escuela Municipal de Manila (then located in Intramuros, Manila) to the Jesuits. At the time of the change-over, the school was wholly state subsidized but it became a private school during the time of American occupation in the Philippines. Since then it has moved from Manila to its current location and received a full university charter in 1959.

Its principal campus is located in Loyola Heights, Quezon City. Metropolitan Manila is home to the university’s college and graduate schools in addition to the related high school and grade school. The university’s professional schools of business, law, and government are housed at two additional campuses located in Rockwell Center and Salcedo Village, both in Makati City, Philippines. The Ateneo school of medicine and public health is housed in a fourth facility located in the Don Eugenio Lopez Sr. Medical Complex in Ortigas Center (Pasig City).

The Ateneo de Manila University offers comprehensive programs at the elementary, secondary, undergraduate and graduate levels of study. The academic offerings encompass many fields of education including the Arts, Humanities, Business, Law and Legal, Social Sciences, Music, Philosophy, Theology, Medicine, Public Health, Biology, Culinary Arts, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Entrepreneur, Computer Science and Information Technology, Lawyers, Engineering, Environmental Science, Finance and Government. Aside from teaching courses of study, the Ateneo de Manila also is home to and sponsors research and social outreach across the broad range of academic disciplines.

It is one of only two public or private universities in the Philippines to receive Level IV accreditation (which is the highest level) from the Federation of Accrediting Agencies in the Philippines and and fromthe PAASCU. The Level IV accreditation was awarded to Ateneo de Manila University on June 2004.

Among the Ateneo de Manila University’s famous alumni are Jose Rizal (a Philippine national hero), several popular leaders of the propaganda movement during Philippine Revolution against Spain and the Philippine-American War, famous politicians including three Philippine Presidents, political activists, professionals, baseball players, businessmen, and some famous writers, scientists, educators and artists.
